Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (February, 1986)
Authors: Irwin Maxwell Stillman and Samm Sinclair Baker
Average review score:

Best diet I ever tried!
I used this diet back in the 70's. Weight loss was incredible. It was so easy. Now that high-protein diets are back, his beat all I've seen so far. This book needs to be republished!

THANK YOU DOCTOR STILLMAN. PLEASE MAKE A COMEACK
Wonderful book. Best diet ever. So easy. So satisfying. So inspiring. Please consider reprinting. The protien diets are back in full force, and yours is the best. I lost 15 lbs in 2 week and felt so good, I went on 2 more weeks and lost a total of 25 lbs. I also lost my book somehow and have looked everywhere for a new one. PLEASE MAKE A COMEBACK!!

Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet
Great diet. Used it in the 1970s with easy, hunger free, weight loss. Atkins cites Stillman for creating a prototype for Atkins' popular high protein - low carb diet, which allows greater fat intake. However, for those who have difficulty losing weight with higher fat intake, Atkins recommends a lower fat approach, which he doesn't clearly describe. This book succinctly defines such an approach. Please REPRINT this wonderful book, recommended by my obstetrician in the 1970s

Adopting After Infertility

I needed this book (updated)
September 9, 2000
After three years and two miscarriages I thought I was buying a "how to" book on adoption. What I got was so much more -- a book that helped my husband and I understand and talk about all the losses that come with infertility and what they meant to us. It helped us decide what we would and would't do for treatment and, surprisingly, helped us realize that we weren't ready to adopt yet. It was emotional reading but well worth the effort. I recommend it to everyone -- those just starting on the infertility road, those that would never adopt and those that are ready to do so. I'm grateful that this book came into my life.
March 9, 2002
It's been a year and a half since writing my first review of this book. I was online tonight ordering more great books about adoption when I remembered writing this review. After all this time Adopting After Infertility still stands as one of the most important books for me in our nearly 5 year journey toward parenthood. I often think of the things we learned by reading this book. In fact, I think that the communication steps we followed in this book became the start of what has been an incredible opportunity to really share our feelings and make decisions at each step along the way that were best for both of us. We slowly learned about and planned for adoption and moved away from the pain of our loss and on to excited expectancy for our yet to be born [adopted] child. I'm grateful to Pat for this book as well as for the book she wrote for families and friends on how to support the adoptive couple. Pat also had an impact in my life by responding to a question I emailed to her about adopting and then adding a bioligical child to our family later. A positive and insightful reply showed up in my inbox less than a day later. The adoption process to date has been an emotional one, easier in some ways and more difficult in other ways than we could ever have imagined. I still recommend this book to everyone I know, including two men that I work with who, with their wives, have been experiencing the same kind of emptyness and pain over their infertility losses that we once felt so keenly. Well worth reading along with two others that meant a lot to me, "The Open Adoption Experience" and "Dear Barbara, Dear Lynne". Best wishes.

MUST READ!
While struggling with infertlity and depression, this book changed my outlook and the direction of my life. It gave me new hope. Each chapter mirrored exactly what I was experiencing from infertility and put everythin into perspective. You will find information about all the losses you are experiencing, how to decide on posible solutions with your partner and all the aspects that involve choosing adoption. Even though my husband and I had talked about the possibility of adopting, we discovered we were not ready yet and that we had to deal with several issues first and make our relationship strong again before making this important decision. My sister who is also infertile read the book and now she is about to adopt a baby who will be born in July. This book has been extremely helpful for the whole family. We live in Costa Rica and there is ZERO literature or support groups here. Thank God for the internet and all the useful resources it provides. Even if you are barely considering the option of adoption or even if you are just starting to deal with infertility, you should read this book (and later give it to your partner, your family and your friends).

Great Source of Healing & Preparation
This book was required reading for the adoption agency we are going through in Dallas, Texas. And I am so glad that it was! The book is partitioned into three parts: 1) Dealing with infertility 2) Making your adoption plan 3) Raising children in a family built by adoption. The first part really helped my husband and I discuss and integrate the losses we have been feeling since our diagnosis of infertility. The second part helped us define our wants, needs, and emotions regarding our choices in adoption. And the third part will be helpful on our lifelong journey of learning how to be parents of adopted children. After experiencing infertility, we definitely appreciated the author's calm, rationale process and frank style in communicating about these very emotional issues. It gave words to some issues that we hadn't yet defined, but were definitely feeling.

The Young Lions
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (March, 1984)
Author: Irwin Shaw
Average review score:

Probably the Best WW 2 novel ever written
This is one of the few books I've read twice (so far). Irwin Shaw - in my opinion - was one of the best novelists of the 20th century, and it's sad to see so many of his work out of print. It is therefore great news that at least "The Young Lions" is now available again in a new paperback edition.

A passionate book about the world at war, seen through the eyes of a group of desparate young soldiers. While Herman Wouk's "The Winds of War" worked brilliantly on a grand scale, Irwin Shaw's novel lets the war happen on a frighteningly real personal level. It's tough, it's emotional - an unrivaled novel that will leave no reader cold.

A great storyteller --and his greatest story
There were dozens of novels based on World War II, but only three that captured American readers by storm. Mailer's THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, Jones's FROM HERE TO ETERNITY and Shaw's THE YOUNG LIONS. Of the three, the most compulsively readable and the least self-conscious is Irwin Shaw's absolutely beautiful novel of love and loss during World War II. If there is a better sculptor of character in 20th century American fiction, I'd like to know who it is. Shaw has a knack for creating palpable characters (including some you'd ordinarily hate -- such as an errant Nazi) who live and breathe. All of his characters -- from Christian and Michael to Hope -- are people we care about, and many of the great historic scenes of the war come alive for even the most casual reader. The subplots (and there are quite a few of them) are integrated seamlessly and the pace is relentless and exciting. One wonders why Shaw never tried to repeat this stunning performance, but perhaps novels as fine as this only occur once in a lifetime. If you want to sink into a richly detailed, compulsively readable saga of World War II, this is the genuine article. A pity there aren't six stars.

Powerful, passionate fiction
The Young Lions is a powerful novel written in the years immediately following World War II. It is a gritty and passionate novel, and in reading it the motivatations of men in times of war to acts of courage, cowardice and base violence come to life in the protagonists. Shaw is a artful in the of crafting his words and sentences in a provoking yet thoughtful manner that is nothing less than masterful. Shaw presents and discusses many complex themes through his characters and vignettes in the story that, having read The Naked and the Dead, it is difficult to tell which one comes first as the truly post-modern American novel.

Although it is a somewhat thick novel, it reads exceptionally fast.

Lichens of North America
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (01 October, 2001)
Authors: Irwin M. Brodo, Sylvia Duran Sharnoff, Stephen Sharnoff, and Canadian Museum of Nature
Average review score:

Superlative in every way
First, this book is enormous! 800 full-size glossy pages - it must weigh 15 pounds. Not something you want to carry around in your backpack.

This book is truly a labor of love. Everything about it is of the highest quality, from the text to the photographs to the printing and binding. Not only do the authors know their subject intimately, but they delight in sharing their knowledge with the reader. A remarkable work, and a great tribute to everyone involved in its production.

Fascinating , beautiful and informative...
As an amateur naturalist and nature photographer I was intriqued by the colors, patterns and variety of lichens, but knew little about them. As my lichen photography collection grew,I wanted to identify the lichen species I had photographed, so I did some research. I returned over and over again to a website that highlighted the chapters and images in "Lichen's of North America." The book seemed an expensive investment for an amateur like myself, but, after reviewing other books on lichens at the library and in bookstores, I realized this book has no equal. Inevitably, I placed my order. When the book arrived, I was first surprised at how BIG it was. Hundreds of four color images jumped off the pages, each a work of art. Most importantly, the text is fascinating and easy to understand, even for a non-scientist. I read the first 14 chapters over the weekend. I was amazed by the important role lichens play in the biodiversity of life. It opened my eyes to an understudied and little understond life form that has a profound influence on the past and future of our planet. I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in biodiversity, natural succession, preserving the environment and nature in general. You will see Lichen in a whole new light!

A beautiful research guide.
Wow sums it all up. The description said "hardcover, color photos, 'X' amount of pages, yet when I picked up a huge, heavy box, I had no idea the book was this great. Touches on just about every lichen in North America, and the pictures are a huge help. Offers identification tips through visual assessment and chemical testing. If you need to research lichen, this book is a great investment at a wonderful price.

Maida's Little House
Published in Hardcover by Buccaneer Books (December, 1987)
Author: Inez H. Irwin
Average review score:

And I thought I was the only one...
I also discovered these books as a young child in the fifties, in the bookshelves of my older cousins. They graciously allowed me to take their copies ( they had three: Village, School and Farm) and I was able to buy House and Houseparty. I have gradually, over the years, found most of the others but am still missing four (Zoo, Lighthouse, Hospital and Treasure Hunt.) They are the perfect combination of fantasy and reality, a life where the children were protected, not controlled, and girls did things too, and even fought for the right to do them. Maida's Little School, along with Dorothy Canfield's "Understood Betsy" profoundly influenced my philosophy of education. Would some reprint company want to reprint all of them? I was unaware of the Buccaneer books edition. Maida lovers of the world unite

Wonderful series for Girls and Boys
I was given the first 13 books of this series when I was 8. My brother and I both loved them and reread them constantly. I am trying to recollect them. I have 2 extra copies of Maida's Little School and one extra of Maida's Little House. I am looking for Houseparty, Theatre, Treehouse, Farm, Hospital and treasurre hunt. I recently got Maida's Little Shop on E-bay

Excellent children's book; great role models for all times
This is a wonderful series that I too discovered as a child. I have 8-9 of the Maida books and thought I was only missing Zoo until I read the other reviews. Would be very interested in hearing from others as to where we might find some of these that are missing from our series. These books stand the test of time through all generations, providing good, clean fun, high morals and boys and girls getting along and solving their differences without violence.

Analysis for Financial Management (Irwin Series in Finance)
Published in Paperback by Richard d Irwin (April, 1995)
Author: Robert C. Higgins
Average review score:

Killer
Each time a re-read a chapter of this book, it is further enriching. I had no background in business finance and only an introductory accounting background prior to reading this book. It is approachable and quite deftly introduces one to the field of finance. Broad coverage of major topics such as financial forecasting, management of growth, debt vs. equity, financial instruments, valuations, discounted cash flow, and drawing from financial statements. Higgins places things in proper context and builds upon knowledge at good, steady pace.

The best introduction to basic financial management.
This book is required at Harvard Business School and is used at top B-schools and bank management trainee programs around the country.
I used the book during my MBA program, even though it was not required. My study group members always requested that I bring it to group meetings. I even had a classmate approach the author (who happens to be my father) at my graduation and ask for his autograph.
The book introduces complex finance concepts like net present value in non-academese language and the real-world examples reinforce the concepts.
I strongly recommend this textbook to anyone preparing to enter business school or embarking on a job in financial analysis.
Professor Higgins is a beloved teacher at his home institution, the University of Washington. You can share in a little of his vast expertise and gift for teaching by reading his book, Analysis for Financial Management.

A useful handbook that simplifies complex finance
This book was required in my William & Mary MBA program. It covers everything from discounted cash flows to ratio analysis to business valuation. My brother liked it so much he "stole" if for months. I took it back and now he wants it for his Christmas gift. So, here I am buying it for him. The net present value of this book is -- real high:) I highly recommend it for business owners or anyone involved in finance and accounting.

Kaplan NCLEX-RN 2000-2001 (Book with CD-ROM for Windows and Macintosh)
Published in Paperback by Kaplan (15 March, 2000)
Authors: Judith A. Burckhardt and Barbara J. Irwin
Average review score:

Terrific publication for those taking NCLEX-RN!!!
This book is great--it shows how to take the NCLEX-RN, and gives example questions with each test-taking point. It even compares it to possible questions we had while in nursing school. It does have one drawback--you can only use the test on the CD once; if you don't finish the test you may use it again, but that is it. Kaplan shows HOW to think through the questions and answers, with an NCLEX mindset.

Kaplan's NCLEX-RN 200-2001 edition
I found this book to be very helpful, especially using their critical thinking strategies. The strategies help you maintain focus and not get distracted by obviously erroneous answers. This book aso includes a nice chapter on Maslow, and how, by using the Maslow method to eliminate answers, test taking is much less difficult. The cd rom that is included with the text is also very good, especially when reviewing. It catagorizes your weak areas and also gives you the correct answer, with rationalization. I took the cd rom test before reading the book, and then again, when I had finished the book. I found my score improved using the Kaplan strategies about 33%. I highly recommend this book and cd rom.

Kaplan NCLEX-RN 2000-2001
This is the ONLY review book that you will need to prepare for the NCLEX-RN. Forget those huge comprehensive review books, they don't work. This book is very fast and very easy reading. The book outlines 10 different stratigies to answering ANY and ALL types of NCLEX questions. Very, very informative, the chapters are well written and very easy to understand. The CD-ROM has 180 questions that are similar to what you will see on the NCLEX, and it gives you a detailed analysis of your performance to determine your weaknesess. The book also contains a practice test of 265 questions. Answers and rationales are in the back of the book also. I did not pass the NCLEX the first time around. I read one of those 1400 page comprehensive review books, answered 1000's of practice questions, and took a three day review course, it didn't work. The Kaplan NCLEX-RN 2000-2001 book is the ONLY book I used to prepair for the second go around, and I passed thanks to the strategies outlined in this book. I read this book over and over--it worked great!!! I can't say enough great things about it!!! BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

Powerful Prayers
Published in Hardcover by Renaissance Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Larry King, Irwin Katsof, and Robert H. Schuller
Average review score:

Powerful Prayer a Must Read
Powerful Prayers is a Must Read Reading Powerful Prayers provides you amazingly simple examples of commuincating with God through personal everyday prayer. It opens the door to an otherwise complex arena of thought. The discussion between Larry King and Rabbi Katsof is sensitive and thought provoking. The interviews add incredible depth to the discussion. They also legitimize informal prayer, and the many different ways people have found to communicate with their respective spiritual beings. I recommend this book to everyone who is open to exlporing their individual communication with God. It is a must read. It has changed my entire understanding or paradigm in regards to my relationship with God outside of a house of worship.

Simply Powerful
Mr. King delved into the foundation of Spirituality and Religion and made simple an otherwise complex and controversial issue. The book focuses on the individual and his or her communication with God, while setting aside religious beliefs. I would like to recommend to friends who are too formal about prayers and to those who maybe agnostic such as Larry King in his book.

A must-read for inspiration
Unlike most "religious" category books, this book lacks the preachy quality that causes most readers to not absorb the text. This book insightfully breaks down barriers between different religious beliefs and simply brings forth the universal belief in a higher power. The people that Larry King and Rabbi Katsof chose to interview are made more personable and are made more tangible through their everyday prayers, which are similar to ours, and their quest to be closer to God. This book would make a fabulous holiday gift that is sure to please a recipient of any religious background.

Hunting for Hidden Gold (Hardy Boys, 5)
Published in Audio Cassette by Imagination Studio (February, 2003)
Authors: Franklin W. Dixon and Bill Irwin
Average review score:

Once you start reading, you cant stop
Hardy Boys, Hunting for Hidden Gold is one of the best books I have read in my life. It combines mystery, adventure, and suspense all crammed in one book. The Hardy Boys series is a really great series. I usually don't like mystery books but this one is really good.Unlike some books that have boring parts. Hunting for Hidden Gold doesn't have any boring parts. That is very good. I really don't like parts where they just talk and talk about boring things that don't interest me. The Hardy Boys have been around for awhile and people still read them. Hardy Boys can be read by all ages. it is not really hard to read. In the whole Hardy Boys series there are 58 books. I am looking forward to reading more books from the series. Hunting for Hidden Gold is a sort of long book. It is about 150 pages long. That is not too long but it is not very short either. Since it is long, it gets lots of action in it. If it was any longer, it would have some boring parts in it. In conclusion, this book deserves five stars.

Incredible!!
... This book is excellent; definately one of the top three of the series. The action starts on page 1 and doesn't let up until the book is finished. Hunting For Hidden Gold has perhaps the best mystery out of all of the books in the series and is written quite well unlike most of the books put out after the early 1950s. The book is very exciting, as quite often Frank and Joe are chasing, or being chased by, the criminals. Definately one of the best, no Hardy Boys fan should miss this one.

Exiting, Fun, and a little Scary!
If you like to explore secret passage ways or disguise yourself as someone else, if you like to go on adventures and fight the bad guy while solving a mystery, than this is the book for you. I have read several of the Hardy Boys Mysteries that happened before this and this was one of my favorites! Not only will you read just how the boys escape from the bad guys but also you can learn some nice, cunning tricks to make your enemy run!

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook : How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (October, 1998)
Author: Dena Irwin
Average review score:

Best cookbook, easy, delicious, a must buy
Are you tired of searching through healthy cookbooks to find a recipe, and then spending more than a hour in preparation? This book was a great find. Your grocery list is prepared, buy your food, prepare in one day (about 1 hour), and you're set for the week. The food is delicious (and healthy). If Dena Irwin writes another cookbook in this manner, she will definately have a sale from me.

Five Stars
Right this minute I can tell you what I'm having for dinner every night for the rest of the week. Not only that, the ingredients are already in my house because a weekly shopping list is included in the book! And the meals are super quick to make, healthy (the author's a nutritionist) and filling. A life-saver for this single guy.

This book is a treasure for every working parent.
This is the best cookbook I have ever used. The recipes are quick and easy and taste great. There are hardly any pots and pans to clean up. The menus and shopping lists help to keep me organized. This book has changed my life. I can now cook healthy meals for my family in just a few minutes. No more take out. I highly reccomend it.
